Go for a Stroll
Galway has a handful of walks that’ll give you a great view of both the city and the sea. It’s the perfect spot to lace up your sneakers and get your steps in while enjoying its one-of-one charm. Be warned, Galway can get quite windy, so I’d bring a sweater or windbreaker if I were you!
The Long Walk
By the harbour, you’ll find The Long Walk. Lined with a stretch of brightly coloured houses on one side and the water on the other, there’s much to take in. On a sunny day, the streets are buzzing with people enjoying the walk’s seaside locale and that extra dose of vitamin D. There, you can watch kayakers coursing through the River Corrib, stroll beneath Spanish Arch, and pop into the Galway City Museum for a little history.
Salthill Prom
Better known as “The Prom” by locals, Salthill Prom is a lovely walkway with an unbeatable view. Gaze out at the North Atlantic and take in the refreshing, salty breeze. Make your way over to the end of your journey at Blackrock Beach and be sure to kick the wall while you’re there for good luck. If you’re in the mood for a dip, Blackrock Diving Tower is a great spot when the conditions are right. If sitting down for a meal is more your speed, head into Blackrock Cottage for a delicious Irish full breakfast.

There are many great places to eat out in Galway. From brunch spots that’ll make you feel like you’re dining in a storybook to craveable dishes fit for a night out, there’s something for everyone.
Corrib House Tea Rooms
Located in a cozy bed and breakfast, Corrib House Tea Rooms is an amazing choice for brunch which is served all day long. Alongside the most beautiful interior, you can enjoy a delectable meal with the River Corrib as your backdrop. I would recommend ordering the quiche if you’re itching for something savoury, or the buttermilk pancakes if you’d prefer something sweet. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a warm pot of Lyons tea.
McDonagh’s
McDonagh’s is the place to go for a classic, fresh plate of fish and chips. Decked out in a maritime motif, this stop is a fun one for the whole family. Serving up large portions of fish and chips, you’ll surely leave this restaurant stuffed. Be sure to order a side of garlic or tartare[LA1] sauce for dipping and don’t skimp on the vinegar for a meal you’ll be reminiscing about long past lunch.
Xi’an Street Food
Chinese food might not be the first thing to pop into your mind when considering a trip to Galway. However, you’ve got to head to Xi’an Street Food for a spice bag, an Irish Chinese takeaway staple that’s made quite the name for itself. Dished up piping hot, this blend of chips, crispy chicken, and spices is famous for a reason. Dunk it all in a side of curry sauce and you’ll be cleaning your plate.

Galway’s pub scene is truly like no other. With a lively and welcoming atmosphere, going for a night on the town won’t disappoint. Sit at the bar for an unmatched pint of Guinness and revel in some live music. From more modern, dance-worthy tunes played in places like The Quays Bar and Music Hall to Irish traditional music in spots such as The Crane Bar, there are seemingly endless opportunities for delight. If you’re looking for an outdoor patio, Carroll’s Bar has an outdoor space with booths in the style of mini caravans for a little extra whimsy.
Watch a Hurling Match
Hurling is one of Ireland’s national sports. Known as the most fast-paced field sport in the world, watching a match will give you all the excitement you’re looking for. With Galway matches playing out of Pearse Stadium, this is the perfect activity for any sports-lover.
Get Your Shop On
From Quay Street to Shop Street, there are many boutiques and stores that I’m sure you’d love to get lost in. Walk past local buskers among the green, white, and orange flags, to stops with lots of goodies that you’ll want to take home. Head into the Aran Sweater Market for a traditional Irish sweater that’ll keep you warm and toasty throughout your whole trip. If you’re an art-lover like me, head down the road and stop by Bernie Keogh Fine Art to buy a showstopping painting from a local artist.
