5 Tips for Flying Safely This Season

Whether you’re thinking of flying to a destination within Canada or planning on venturing further out, taking a flight looks a little different these days. Travelling abroad during a pandemic isn’t ideal, but if you’re planning on jet-setting, it’s important to protect yourself with these helpful tips before you fly.

1. Stock up on hand sanitizer

Sanitizer is one of the most basic forms of germ protection, and it’s the most convenient way to ensure your hands are bacteria-free. Handwashing is always preferred, but when you’re travelling, it’s not always an option, so if you happen to touch a door handle or something on the plane, sanitizing your hands is always a safe bet. In the same right, try to reduce touching as many high-frequency surfaces as possible, especially on planes.

2. Use sanitation wipes to wipe down your seat and surrounding area

Speaking of sanitizing, as soon as you arrive on the plane, keep your sanitation wipes handy, and start wiping everything you may come into contact with. That includes seat arms, seatbelts, trays, and, if you’re sitting at a window seat, the interior wall of the plane.

3. Opt for bottled or fountain water

Whether you choose to purchase a bottle of water at the airport, or bring your own water bottle to fill up at a water station pre-flight, either of those are great choices compared to airplane tap water. The water tends to hold a ton of bacteria, so it’s safer to skip out.

4. Utilize the overhead bins

If you’re travelling light, you’re likely travelling solely with carry-on luggage. But if you happen to be bringing other bags, always use the overhead bin rather than the space in front of you. It’s very difficult to ensure the space below seats is cleaned thoroughly, so to be on the safe side, the overhead bin is the way to go.

5. Don’t use airline blankets

If you often find that you get cold during flights, it’s a good idea to layer your outfit to ensure you stay warm. If that’s not enough, bringing your own blanket that can easily be washed post-flight is your best bet. As soon as you get to your destination, wash your hands, take a shower, and put your clothes in the wash to rid of any lasting bacteria.
