Cartagena is a vibrant tapestry of colourful streets, historical allure, and stunning landscapes on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. This isn’t just your ordinary coastal getaway; it’s where historic architecture meets creativity, creating lots of photo ops for Instagram and other social platforms. Looking for the best spots to visit in Cartagena? Come along as we explore the most captivating places you can’t miss. Get ready to fall in love with this lively city!

1. The Walled City

The essence and soul of Cartagena, the Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada), encapsulates the magic of stepping into a bygone era. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its ancient stone fortifications, vivid colonial buildings, and charming balconied houses provide a gorgeous backdrop. Every nook of this historical district presents an ideal photo opportunity— from the lively street art and cozy cafés to the emblematic Clock Tower Gate.

2. Getsemaní

Just outside the walls of the Old City lies Getsemaní, an up-and-coming neighbourhood known for its street art and contemporary ‘hipster’ vibe. The streets here are lined with murals that tell stories of the city’s culture and history, making it a vibrant center for arts and creativity. Here, you will find artists painting and music echoing throughout the streets during the day, and at night, Plaza Trinidad transforms into a lively evening social with everyone dancing in the street. Every corner promises a discovery, every mural a backdrop for that perfect Insta shot.

3. Café del Mar

Café del Mar is not just a spot; it’s the spot for witnessing the most beautiful sunsets over the Caribbean. Arrive early because it gets packed, secure a front-row seat, order a drink, and let nature do the rest. The blend of colours across the sky and sea will leave your followers in awe.

Tip: Keep your belongings close to you and valuables at your accommodations. A lot of people come to see the sunset, and I’ve heard sometimes theft happens.

4. Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands are 27 small islands located off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia. They are a pristine paradise ideal for adventurers and relaxation seekers alike. Their crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs make them a prime spot for snorkelling and diving and a nice escape from the bustle of the city. I visited Isabella; it was fantastic.

Tip: The docks can get crowded to head to the island in the morning, so plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to ensure you don’t miss your departure. Also, sit on the right side of the boat coming back; you’ll thank me later!

5. Alma

Hidden within the walls of a stunning boutique hotel, Alma presents a luxurious dining ambiance coupled with a menu that could easily make you a Colombia convert. The menu features modern spins on traditional Colombian dishes, like their oxtail risotto and Soul of Coqui, which were superb! Be sure to book ahead!

6. Candé

Tucked away in the heart of Cartagena’s historic Walled City, Candé is a culinary treasure that embodies the soul of Caribbean Colombian cuisine. Candé offers so much more than just a meal; they do a great job tapping into the culture. From the moment you step through the doors, the rhythms of live local music and the scent of traditional spices promise an unforgettable meal, and it is delivered.

7. Celele

Celele voted one of the world’s top 50 restaurants, is a reservation-only hotspot that offers an exclusive ambiance. It’s right in the heart of the Getsemaní district, and when you taste the meals, you see why it is. The neighbourhood’s creativity and the Colombian culture seep into the dining experience with flavour combinations you’d never expect to work in unison.

Tip: If you plan to visit on your next trip, book the reservation on your first day in town. It’s a quaint restaurant, so they get booked up quite quickly.

And there you have it, the inside scoop on Cartagena’s can’t-miss spots! Cartagena is one of those cities you will never forget. Every colourful street is filled with history and has such a vibrant culture. This guide merely scratches the surface of what awaits in this magical corner of Colombia.
