How to Apply for a Nexus Card as A Canadian

Did you hear that the federal government plans to raise the cost to apply for a NEXUS from $50 USD to $120 USD on October 1st, 2024? There’s no better time than now to submit your application to ensure you don’t pay the higher fee! It’s a great opportunity to take your travel experience to the next level and skip long lines at the border and airport. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the NEXUS application process, share some helpful tips, and get you on your way to seamless and hassle-free journeys. So, let’s dive in!

What’s the NEXUS program All About?

First things first, let’s talk about what the NEXUS program is all about. NEXUS is a joint initiative by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). It allows pre-approved, low-risk travellers to expedite their border clearance process when travelling between Canada and the United States. The NEXUS card is valid for five years and offers a range of benefits to streamline your travel experience. Plus, TSA Pre-Check benefits are thrown into the mix; you’ll breeze through security checkpoints like a seasoned jet setter.

Who’s Eligible?

To be eligible for NEXUS, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the United States. Mexican nationals enrolled in the Viajero Confiable program are also eligible. Additionally, applicants should have no criminal convictions or pending charges in any country. Read here for more information on reasons for ineligibility.

The Application Process

Getting started with NEXUS is easier than you might think. First, be sure to use either the Government of Canada page or the US Customers and Border Protection website to apply. Numerous third-party websites have been claiming to assist with NEXUS applications—they’re often scams and charge inflated prices (hint: these sites will usually come up as a sponsored ad when you google “Nexus application”!). Sticking to the official NEXUS website will ensure a smooth and secure application process, without any mishaps.

As previously mentioned, the application fee is $50 USD until October 1st,2024. Once ready, complete the online application form accurately, providing personal and travel-related information. Pay attention to details and ensure the application is fully completed. This will help expedite the processing of your application and attention to detail during this stage can significantly expedite the processing of your application.

What Happens After Applying?

After submitting your application, it’s a waiting game! You’ll have to continue checking the status of your application through the Trusted Traveler Program dashboard. To do so, you’ll have to log in, then scroll to your applications in progress. Typically, your application will take roughly 18- 20 months to be reviewed before an interview is requested, but it depends, some applications are processed quickly.

Once your application has been reviewed, schedule an interview at a NEXUS enrollment center. During the interview, US and Canadian officials will ask questions to verify your identity and collect biometric data, including fingerprints. If your application is approved, you’ll receive your NEXUS card in the mail within a few weeks.

By following these valuable tips, you’ll breeze through the application process in no time! Before you know it, you’ll be waving goodbye to long border lines and embracing the joy of stress-free travel between Canada and the United States. Don’t wait until the fee increases – take advantage of this opportunity now.
