Spooky Travels: 4 Cities That Come Alive at Halloween

Every October, cities across the globe embrace the spooky season in their own unique ways. While Halloween has its strongest roots in North America, the spirit of ghosts, witches, and eerie celebrations reaches far beyond this continent. If you’re planning a fall getaway, four destinations stand out as truly unforgettable: Dublin, Mexico City, Transylvania and Salem. Each blends history, culture, and a touch of the supernatural to create the ultimate Halloween experience.

Dublin, Ireland – Where Halloween Began

Halloween owes much of its origin to Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. It was believed the veil between the living, and the dead grew thin during this time, allowing spirits to cross over. That heritage makes Dublin one of the most authentic Halloween destinations

The city celebrates with the Bram Stoker Festival, honouring the Irish author of Dracula. Expect gothic theatre, night-time parades, interactive haunted houses, and candlelit readings of classic horror tales.

For a deeper connection to Celtic tradition, nearby towns host storytelling sessions and bonfires reminiscent of ancient Samhain practices. Picture listening to ghost stories around a crackling fire in the Irish countryside—that’s Halloween magic at its finest.

Mexico City, Mexico – Day of the Dead Vibrance

While not exactly Halloween, Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) takes place at the same time and offers an unforgettable experience. From October 31 to November 2, Mexico City bursts with parades, music, and elaborate altars honoring departed loved ones.

The most famous event is the Mega Desfile de Día de Muertos, a parade featuring giant skeleton puppets, marigold-covered floats, and performers in intricate skull makeup. The atmosphere is festive rather than frightening—it’s about celebrating life and remembering ancestors with joy. Families visit cemeteries with food, candles, and music to spend time with loved ones who have passed.

Transylvania, Romania – The Land of Dracula

For gothic atmosphere, nothing beats Transylvania. This region of Romania is forever linked to the legend of Count Dracula, inspired by Vlad the Impaler. Mist-covered mountains, medieval towns, and ancient fortresses create a haunting backdrop perfect for October adventures.

The centerpiece is Bran Castle, often called “Dracula’s Castle.” Around Halloween, it hosts themed parties with music, costumes, and candlelit tours. Walking its staircases and stone chambers feels like stepping into a gothic novel.

The medieval town of Sighisoara, Vlad’s birthplace, also celebrates with masquerade balls, storytelling, and night tours. Beyond the festivities, cobblestoned streets and pastel-colored houses lend a fairytale quality—though one with a sinister edge.

For travellers who love blending history with atmosphere, Transylvania delivers the perfect Halloween mix of legend, lore, and landscape.

Salem, Massachusetts – The Witch City

When it comes to Halloween travel, few places top Salem. Known for the 1692 witch trials, the city fully embraces its haunted reputation. During October, Salem becomes a month-long festival called Haunted Happenings. Streets fill with costumed revelers, food stalls, and performers, while shops stock everything from spell books to crystal balls.

History lovers can explore the Salem Witch Museum, the Witch House, or the Peabody Essex Museum for artifacts beyond the witch trial era. If thrills are more your style, nightly ghost tours lead visitors through dark alleyways with chilling tales of restless spirits.

Tip: Salem gets packed in October—book hotels early or take the train from Boston to avoid traffic.

Halloween travel is about more than costumes and candy—it’s a chance to see the world through a different lens. Each destination reminds us that Halloween is as much about culture and history as it is about fright. Travelling to these places in late October means stepping into traditions and atmospheres that bring the season to life in unforgettable ways.

Happy spooky travels,

Marie
