Now that you understand the importance of travel insurance for cruising, you may have had about coverage, let’s dive into some tips to stay healthy on a cruise. Without further ado, here are a few preventative measures and quick ways to enjoy your cruise – hopefully sickness free!

Prevent uncomfortable stomach pains
Unfortunately, no matter where you’re travelling to, stomach pains and aches are common on vacations in general. However, depending on the time of year you’re travelling, the seas could be quite rough, so seasickness is more possible. Here are a few things to keep in mind to avoid both sea sickness or an unexpected stomach bug:
How to avoid sea sickness
- Book a lower deck, mid ship cabin to reduce impact from cruise’s movement
- Pack acupressure wrist bands
- Bring an anti-nausea medication
- Pack ginger tablets
- Get plenty of fresh air when possible
How to avoid stomach bugs
- Frequently wash and sanitize your hands after using the bathroom, before eating and after touching railings and other hard surfaces
- Take probiotics
- Pace yourself with drinks and food and try to get to the buffet early while the food options are still fresh
- Stay hydrated

Wash your hands regularly
Due to the nature of the vessel and its close quarters, if someone is sick on a cruise, there is a chance that you can get sick too, especially in this post-pandemic world. But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s how to stop the spread of germs! Here are a few things you can do to help prevent them or a least hold them at bay:
- Get plenty of rest, and listen to your body throughout the cruise
- Frequently wash and sanitize your hands; it would be wise to carry your sanitizer with you everywhere you go!
- Take vitamin C daily
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve to stop the spread of germs
- In crowded or heavily congested areas, feel free to put a medical face mask on. It could be helpful to bring a few of them with you to wear throughout the duration of the cruise!

Boost your immune system
Although you’re on vacation and will be tempted to indulge, don’t forget about your health! Here are some helpful reminders to help you maintain your healthy lifestyle, even while setting sail:
- Drink plenty of water; pack a large refillable water bottle that you can take with you around the ship
- Go easy on the alcohol; even though it may be included in the cruise, doesn’t mean you need to drink your money’s worth!
- Aim to get a decent sleep so you’re well rested for a full day of fun the next day!
- Eat fruit and veggies first at the buffet, then dig into the more decadent fare, like pastries and dessert
- Take advantage of the ship’s gym, or any classes they offer such as dance, Zumba, or fitness
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator, and try to aim for at least 10,000 steps a day if you can!
