Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg, MB

Built in 1913, this historic hotel is an architectural landmark situated right in downtown Winnipeg. In 1981 it was even designated a national historic site. Those looking for a haunted (but opulent) experience should book room 202, where the ghost of a widower supposedly greets hotel guests.

HI Ottawa Jail Hostel, Ottawa, ON

This unique accommodation was converted from Nicholas Street Gaol, more commonly known as Ottawa Jail, which closed its doors in 1972. The jail housed the city’s criminals and misfits, including inmates on death row, for more than a century. Today, guests are welcome to stay in “rooms” restored to their original condition and there are tours hosted daily. You can even visit the gallows, which hadn’t been in use since the 1940s.

Caribou Hotel, Carcross, YK

Although this historic gold Rush era hotel is currently closed for major renovations and set to reopen to visitors in the coming years, it doesn’t stop curious travellers from visiting the site. In 2008 it was designated a historic site in the province and has long been a significant focus of local lore. The current owners have been dedicated to restoring the modest three-storey landmark to its former glory as a boutique hotel, to honour its history. Keep an eye out for room listings in the future!

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, BC

Although there are a handful of Fairmont hotels around Canada that are said to be haunted—and equally luxurious—such as the grandiose Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, the Fairmont Chateaux Laurier in Ottawa, or the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, our local favourite would have to be the Fairmont Vancouver, as featured in our list of spooky places to go for Halloween.
