From the north to the south, Portugal has a variety of destinations to enjoy that’ll tick boxes for all sorts of travellers. So, when planning which cities you’ll hit, it’s important to think about what experiences you want out of your trip.
Lisbon
The capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is a spectacular urban centre with a lively feel. Great for lovers of all things historical and cultural who don’t mind the hustle and bustle of a busy city. It’s known for being a hilly city so be ready with good walking shoes or maybe choose somewhere in the Algarve, which I’ll touch on later, that has a flatter terrain. However, if the journey ever gets you too tired, you can always hop on one of the city’s many funiculars–brilliant yellow cable trams that run for most of the day.
Porto
Porto is a popular destination for a reason. With breezy beaches accented by a city brimming with charm, there’s truly nothing else I’d ask for. For travellers who love the finer things in life, Porto is home to Port wine. It’s a delicious red only made in the region that pairs well with dessert, making it the perfect delicacy to enjoy on a wine tour. With sandy escapes just a quick tram ride away and grassy, music-filled spots to sit and watch the sunset, Porto is a great place to visit for those looking for a bit of variety–travellers who want to lie out in the sun and also immerse themselves in some lively culture.
The Algarve Region
This one is for the traveller that wants to sit back and relax. Slower paced than Lisbon and Porto, the Algarve region is located in the south of Portugal. With its laid-back vibe, this area is a treat for nature-lovers and those who simply want to bask in that sweet Portugal sunshine. Giving that quintessential snowbird vacation, you can spend the warm day sprawled out at the beach, hit the golf course for a bit of competitive fun, and even end the day with wine-tasting. As a food-lover, Portugal has been one of my favourite travel destinations thus far. Its coastal locale means you should definitely relish in all the wonderful seafood. Order up some bacalhau, salt cod, and some sardinhas assadas, freshly grilled sardines (you can thank me later)! Enjoy the crisp delight of the humble croquetas, which can be filled with beef or pork. Finally, dig into some of the most craveable pastries out there, pastel de nata, which are toasty, flaky, and custardy in all the right ways.
Do – Soak in the Music
Portugal is a place where the music finds you. Live tunes flow through the streets around just about every turn. So, when you come across a busker or a band, stop, listen, and maybe even dance it out for a song or two. You won’t regret it!
