My Canadian Glamping Bucket List

Camping has always been something that I felt was good for my body and soul. Travel and life outdoors are how the human species began, and our need to connect to our land is something I found to be universal throughout my travels. Winter combined with lockdown was a difficult time for me, and I found solace in dreaming; dreaming of future travels and of the day when we could go out and experience the world again.

Whether its camping or glamping, get out there!

Everyone needs to travel and camp at least once. However, if you prefer comfort, or are getting a little less capable of sleeping on a tent floor (like me), glamping is a happy medium. It enriches life and adds positive physical rhythms to it. Pack up and find a place to sleep under the stars….in comfort!

Glamping bucket list ideas from coast-to-coast

From this pent-up wanderlust within me, I began to build my bucket lists—my foodie bucket list, my wildlife viewing bucket list, and my ultimate pampering bucket list; really, I found a way to dream about all and any destination around the world! Given our current international travel restrictions and the arrival of warm weather, I thought I would share my Canadian Glamping bucket list with you!

Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort, BC

Researching this resort gave me chills. Nimmo Bay is a family-owned resort that’s tucked away in the heart of a remote island rainforest, far away from the everyday. This is a place where you could fill every moment with adventure or enjoy a nice, relaxing time with a glass of wine. They have wildlife tours where you can catch glimpses of whales, bears and do so in an ethical way! There is ample space for kayaking, paddling boarding, and hiking. The resort will even pack you a gourmet picnic! If you prefer to acquire your own meal, you can join a local chef to forage for local sea kelp, sea urchin and Dungeness crab then finish the day having your catches cooked for you over an open fire, under the stars. I also appreciate Nimmo Bay for their hyper-sustainable approach to local vegetation and marine life.

OutpostCo Luxury Camping, ON

OutpostCo is closer to home for me, and I am ready to pack my bags. Although this is categorized as luxury, I would say that it is better suited for those who crave adventure and escape from connectivity. Accommodations are furnished bed tents without electricity; all lighting is done by oil lamps and candle lanterns. OutpostCo works with Ascari Hospitality to prepare coolers full of fresh, locally- sourced ingredients, which you can cook using professional grade outdoor propane stoves available on site. The Killarney region is the traditional territory of the Ojibwe people, with ample place to hike and see ancient Native pictographs, petroglyphs and trees. This destination is all about doing things that remind us how restorative the wild can be.

Fogo Island Inn, NL

I’m not certain I can relay how special Fogo Island Inn appears to be. It truly is a relief from the numbing “Groundhog Day” we’re all currently experiencing, built on the principles of sustainability and respect for nature and culture. Activities, events and menus are based on the seven seasons the resort experiences: Winter (Dec 1- Feb 28), Pack Ice (Mar 1- 31), Spring (Apr 1- May 31), Trap Berth (Jun 1- 30), Summer (Jul 1- Aug 31), Berry (Sep 1- Oct 31) and Late Fall (Nov 1- 30). Right now, you’ll find receding ocean ice and the beginning of crab/shrimp season. Then soon to follow, Trap Berth is the historical season for cod trip fishing and blooming wildflowers! The summer season is best for all things outdoors: hiking, beachcombing, bonfires and visiting smaller island offshore. For a small island, there is a lot to offer on Fogo Island.

When travel is once again possible, I can’t wait to explore the wild and adventurous corners of my own country—Canada!

Hélène is TuGo’s Inside Sales Rep and she loves to travel—having been to 25 countries and counting. She also enjoys cycling, camping, hiking, cooking over an open fire, and being outdoors. During the colder months, you’ll find her fighting the winter blues with hot yoga, and taking regular trips to the Niagara region in search of the perfect Pinot Noir.
