Italy is a popular travel destination that attracts lovers of culture, food, history, nature, and more. From the vast streets of Rome to the sandy beaches of the Amalfi coast, there’s no question as to why this fantastic country brings in so many tourists. Most people travel to Italy in the summer months of June, July, and August, but I’m here to tell you why summer may not be the best time to go.
Summer Heat

Visiting Italy in the summer? Make sure to pack some good quality sunscreen, a fan, and a wide-brimmed hat. The sun and the heat during this time is very strong, often reaching temperatures over 30°C. That means that being outdoors during this time can get quite uncomfortable, especially in areas where air conditioning is not so common. So, if you’re looking to avoid overheating, consider visiting Italy in the winter or fall instead, or heading to northern Italy, where the weather is more mild.
Price Surges

High demand and foot traffic in Italy during the summer months ultimately means higher prices. During this season, flights, train tickets, accommodations, and even those reclinable beach chairs under the iconic striped umbrellas can often be harder to come by and at a steeper price point. So, it’s best to avoid peak season if you’re looking to travel on a budget, but if you must book in the summer, try to do so as early as possible. Trust me—your wallet will thank you!
Crazy Crowds

A big reason why many people visit Italy is to see the historical landmarks. From Michelangelo’s David in Florence to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, there’s truly so much to see! The best way to take in these amazing crossroads between history, artistry, and culture is to really have the time and space to marvel at them. The last thing you want is to waste your time waiting in line just to have your view blocked. So, set yourself up for success and visit during the off season when wait times will be lower and crowds will be more sparse.
Off Season Alternative

Instead of the summertime, consider visiting Italy in late September or October. It’s a great time during the shoulder season when the weather is still warm but not scorching hot. It’s also the perfect moment for all the wine lovers out there. With the grape harvest at its peak, there are often fabulous festivals to visit and enjoy!

Italy is certainly a destination of dreams (mine, anyways)! Take this post as a sign to book that once-in-a-lifetime off season trip soon, and I’m sure it’ll be everything you’d hoped for and more. When you get there, have an affogato for me!
Ciao,
Jacqueline
