What Happens When Mistakes are Made on Medical Health Questionnaires?

Looking to buy travel insurance? Depending on your age, you may be required to complete a medical health questionnaire.
If you’re required to do so, but there are questions you’re unsure of, always talk with your doctor first. He/she knows you personally, and has access to your medical health history. You can also call or visit your insurance broker, who can shed some light on the questionnaire. Here are our tips to filling out a medical health questionnaire.

What happens when mistakes are made on Medical Health Questionnaires?

Here’s a real-life example of what can happen when a mistake is made:

64-year-old Tina travelled to California on vacation. While away, she was admitted into the hospital with a respiratory infection. She was discharged with an oxygen tank after several days. Tina’s hospital and medical expenses came to $44,345.97, but when it came time to review Tina’s claim, it was found that she had not answered her Medical Health Questionnaire accurately.

While most insurance companies would have denied the claim fully, we applied a $15,000 deductible and were able to reimburse Tina for the remainder of the claims cost – $34,345.97. Without the added protection of this deductible, Tina would have been on the hook for the total amount.

If you make an honest mistake, ask your broker or insurance provider how they handle this type of situation.

  1. In your example, what would the deductible have been if Tina had not made an error in her questionnaire?
